Transcriptionists

We see a great future for medical transcriptionists, one in which your role within the healthcare team continues to grow. Much like a sign language interpreter, your skills enable you to translate quickly from voice to text using your fingers, and to take confusing dictation and turn it into meaningful documentation. Increasingly, you will serve as a consultant to medical practices, helping to improve the quality of clinical documentation.

The medical transcription profession is growing, and we want you to grow with us. The US Department of Labor estimates that the need for US–based medical transcriptionists will grow by 18 to 26 percent in the next eight years. Electronic medical records, speech recognition, and overseas transcription are not expected to reduce the need for well–trained medical transcriptionists. Rather, growing numbers of medical transcriptionists will be needed to amend patient records, edit documents from speech recognition systems, and identify discrepancies in medical reports.

The role of the medical transcriptionist is changing, and we want you to benefit from these changes with us. Technology will reduce the volume of transcription, but will increase the need for experienced transcriptionists who can serve as medical documentation consultants to physician practices. The ability to spot mistakes or inconsistencies in a medical report and ensure they are corrected reduces the chance of treatment errors and ensures high quality patient care.

We see a great future.
